30 Songs in 30 Days, Day 6 - A song that reminds you of somewhere

Mom took this awesome picture at a game we went to in 2006

Sorry, yall.

It's officially basketball season. Tonight was Big Blue Madness. I only have one song I can possibly choose.

It's the song we sing at the end of every Kentucky basketball game and before every Kentucky Derby.

It reminds me of my home.

It's 'My Old Kentucky Home', written by Stephen Foster.

  1. Oh man, I love that song, even though I've never lived in KY (although my brother-in-law does). I love it when they all sing it at the Derby.

    1. Oh, me too! I haven't been to the Derby in years; but even watching it at home, it gives me chills every time.

    1. Hi Pat!,
It's appropriated for all of our sports events but it's not really a sports song, it's our official state song.
      :)

  7. I love your loyalty and have always wished I could hear the song sung at the Kentucky Derby. Another thing to add to my bucket list! I cross one thing off and add two more. That way I can't ever die! LOL

    1. Ha! I never thought of it that way...too true. :)

Living just a few minutes from Churchill Downs, we tend to take the Derby for granted. The last time I went was in 1988, I think. The year Winning Colors won. I always remember the horses!
I've actually worked at the Downs and its offtrack site for a few Derbies. The past few years we've spent Derby Day at the offtrack site in one of the special rooms where they serve dinner and drinks and has its own betting windows. The entire room of about 200 people sings along with the song, too, and you can hear all the people outside singing too. It always brings tears to my eyes.

  8. It is a nice song, though some of the lyrics are...um...troubling? "Maryland, My Maryland," my home state's song, has similar problems. Gotta love the South!

My favorite use of the song is actually in "The Wizard of Oz." You hear the strains a few times when Dorothy's going on about home. It's a strange choice. "Home on the Range" would have made a lot more sense. That song's about Kansas!

    1. The lyrics to our song keep having to be updated because they're so...troubling! The original lyrics are so embarrassing I don't even want to think about it. I'm proud of being from the South except for when I'm nottttt.

Home on the Range has such a pretty melody, I love that song.
