The Armchair Squid has inspired me to participate in the 30 Day Song Challenge from years ago. I'm way, way behind the times, here, and I'm not even sure I can do an every day thing, much less come up with something for every category but, hey! I love a challenge. Day 1 - My Favorite Song Favorite songs are hard to choose because they change yearly, monthly, daily...even hourly. So I had to go by method of all-time favorite artist, and then choosing my all-time favorite song was easy. :) Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton is the best song ever. Hands down. Dolly goes up there in the annals of American songwriters with Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Dolly has written a hundred amazing songs, including one that became the biggest hit in the world, but this autobiographical love song to her mother defines Dolly in just a few simple lines. I can't even imagine how many thousands of times she has sung this song, but every time I hear her sing it, she still sings it with love and grace...you imagine the love for her mother she put into this song; just as Dolly's mother put all her love for Dolly into that patchwork coat. Love makes me happy.
So I am really excited about this new Metallica film coming out, right? But I think I'm the only one...
I can usually depend on Chelsea to back me up on all things Metallica. I did raise her right, after all. But she went all bah, humbug on me...if it's not the real thing, she's not interested, apparently.
I dragged Dwayne out at midnight to see the last Metallica movie...this was like ten years ago or something and he is still complaining about it. Dwayne's music tastes are more toward Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and other things that I don't like. My tastes are more eclectic, I like a lot of indie music, songwriter stuff. And Metallica.
Way, way, way before Dwayne and I started dating...I was just a 16-year old girl who was only allowed to go to concerts if I went with my big brother. Now that I think about it, my poor brother! He was 21 years old, going to concerts with his best friends Rich and Dwayne, and being forced to take his little sister and her friends.
That's how we saw Aerosmith back in the day, and Bon Jovi...and how I distinctly remember a drunken 21-year old Dwayne hitting on one of my 16-year old friends (my brother had made it clear that I was off limits, LOL). Ugh.
Concerts. You go to so many in your life, it's hard to keep track of all that you've been to, right? I believe the last one I went to was last summer, when I saw Kris Kristofferson at the Iroquois Amphitheatre. It was outside. In the summer. Meaning I would never have voluntarily chosen to go, but my grandpa had bought the tickets and asked me specifically to go with him...so I went, and it was awesome spending some one-on-one time with him.
The only time I've seen Metallica in concert was in 1992. They happened to come to town when I was four months pregnant with Chelsea. I had no choice. I had to go. What if it was my only chance? Is that scandalous? A pregnant unwed teenager at a Metallica concert?
Sounds like a show on MTV.
But anyway, this has been a very rambling post, and I think I had a point... I have two great musical loves. My first is and always will be Dolly Parton - I've seen her in concert three times, her music makes me happy. My second is Metallica - for 25 years and counting their music has made me happy (don't ask me how), and I'm going to see the movie if I have to go BY MYSELF.
I watched the Country Music awards tonight ONLY because I wanted to see my boy Elton and my girl Dolly sing together... Apparently, the producers of the show knew that this was the only reason I would watch, so I kept hearing, "Coming up, Elton and Dolly...", and I kept falling for it, until there was only ten minutes left to the show and they FINALLY came on stage! Which is worse, TV producers and their diabolical plans to keep you glued to your screen...or people like me, who are so utterly predictable? 'Imagine' Elton and Dolly together...somehow not quite what I expected, but they both make so happy...so it's all good... Favorite song by Dolly Parton: 'Coat of Many Colors' Favorite song by Elton John: 'Michelle's Song', of course! (Heh, I just used this nifty new spell check thing...AOL is just getting sooo high tech...it unfortunately just told me I was spelling my name wrong...who knew?)
I was so motivated, too, until Right Now when I realized that I just don't have an entry available... Some people I'm thinking of right now: Donna & Steve got their papers and are hoping to travel to China to get their daughter within the next 10 days - it all depends on clearing up the last of the red tape, if they miss this window it will probably push back the trip for over a month, because no one can go there in October...Donna says Steve is ready to swim across the Pacific if he has to... A good friend of mine has lost her job and is having other family problems and is very discouraged right now. She's such a great person, I hate to see her so down. My grandpa doesn't really want to see the farm go and isn't looking forward to it. I really think that all the work he puts into it helps keep him young...I hope he'll find many other projects to work on. Not much of an entry...too tired to write or spin...enjoying the cool weather, gentle rain, and soft breezes that the remnants of Frances has brought us...hard to reconcile it...I'm going back to the dentist tomorrow, that's always fun...I'm going to get up before six a.m. so we don't have another morning like this morning, when I ruined my daughter's school day from the very beginning...had a good workout at the Y today - a year ago I would never have believed that those words could come out of my mouth!...now my playlist has shifted and is playing, of all things, "Me and Little Andy" by Dolly Parton...and I'm pretty sure I'll be haunted by Donny and Marie all night long :)... and how in the world did it get to be 1:27 a.m.?
